Fairshare Flour "Set limits to consumption and reproduction and redistribute surplus"

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

Fairshare (sometimes called Future Care as it is about thinking in the long term not just the moment) is one of the three ethics that form the foundation of Permaculture.

Today I have realised how times such as this provide the perfect environment for generosity and sharing to flourish. Yes I know there are some people unable to actually reach their toilet easily as they have to mountaineer over their vast stash of hoarded loo roll. I truely believe, however, that these people are in the minority. I have seen so many acts of selflessness and compassion. Looking purely at my day today there are many examples. A kind neighbour left me a bag of flour on my doorstep another a bag of rhubarb, my line manager from work is dropping off a bag of vegetables. I have lent my garden shears and have given some seeds and gloves to others. Fair share is about sharing what we have excess of it may be time, a gadget, a book or an abundance of courgettes.

For dinner tonight we'll have the true British staple of beans on toast (made from my neighbour's flour and in a bread maker that I was kindly given for free) followed by rhubarb crumble (only made possible by generosity of my lovley neighbours for the flour and rhubarb) and custard (luckily I had a packet in the cupboard so no need of the "Whitstable Mum in Custard Shortage" headline today!) So much generosity and good will has gone into this meal that it will nourish not only our bodies but our souls as well.

Can I just mention the absolute irony of the fact that the custard shortage headline was about the same friend who gave me the breadmaker that I baked the bread in - thank you Jules!
